Collection Item Summary:
Among the items issued to astronauts are velcro-backed leather name tags that can be attached to flight suits and jackets. Space Shuttle pilot and commander Col. Eileen Collins wore this name tag on one or more of her four missions: STS-63 (1995), STS-84 (1997), STS-93 (1999), and STS-114 (2005). She was the first American woman to pilot and command missions in space. Her first two flights were to Russia's Mir space station. As commander, she flew missions to deploy the Chandra X-ray Observatory and visit the International Space Station. This silver wings insignia with star and wreath denotes a command pilot astronaut from the United States Air Force. NASA transferred a number of astronaut name tags to the Museum over the years, including this one in 2012.
