Collection Item Summary:
This American flag quilt commemorates the flight and the crew of STS-107, the Space Shuttle Columbia mission that disintegrated upon reentry on February 1, 2003. Constructed by the Coastal Quilters Guild of Santa Barbara, California, it was given to the family of David Brown, one of the seven astronauts who died aboard the mission. The quilt is a memorial quilt, a long-standing quilting tradition of creating quilts in the memory of a person or group. As such, the quilt represents one expression of the outpouring of sympathy for the families of the lost astronauts in the wake of the disaster.
Doug Brown, Dave Brown's brother, gave the quilt to the Museum in 2006.
