Object Details
Date 18th Century Type ART-Prints, Original Medium Print, Etching on Paper, Uncolored Physical Description Uncolored etching of an aerial view of the Fête de la Fédération, the huge four day commemoration/feast on the Champ de Mars marking the first anniversary of the fall of the Bastille. The print indicates that the moment depicted is July 18, 1790, the last day of the event. It shows Lafayette reviewing the Garde National Parisienne in the presence of the Federation Deputies. A small sealed gas balloon is shown laying on the ground in the upper right quadrant. The legend indicates that an attempt to launch the balloon from inside the enclosure was unsuccessful. Members of the crowd carried it outside into the garden of the Ecole Militaire, and attempted to burn it, at which point it exploded and injured a number of people.
