President John F. Kennedy presents astronaut Alan B. Shepard with the NASA Distinguished Service Medal on May 8, 1961, in a ceremony in the Rose garden at the White House, Washington, D.C., following Shepard's Mercury-Redstone MR-3 suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. Shepard's wife, Louise (Brewer), wearing at white hat, looks on from left. Seen in the background are Wally Schirra (left behind Shepard), John Glenn (just right of Shepard), Gordon Cooper (obscured by microphone), James Webb (behind Kennedy's right shoulder) and Scott Carpenter (far right).
