President John F. Kennedy presents astronaut Alan B. Shepard with the NASA Distinguished Service Medal on May 8, 1961, in a ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House, Washington, D.C., following Shepard's Mercury-Redstone MR-3 suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. Shepard's wife, Louise (Brewer), is seen behind him at center, wearing at white hat. Also seen are John A. "Shorty" Powers (second from left); and at extreme right (right to left), astronaut Scott Carpenter (barely visible at edge of frame), James E. Webb, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Dr. Hugh L. Dryden.
