Collection Item Summary:

Portrait of Charles Ingram Stanton sitting at a desk in front of a world globe and a map of the United States. Stanton served in the Air Mail Service of the Post Office Deprtment, as general secretary of the National Aeronautic Association (1922-24). He then joined the Commerce Department and served in the Aeronautics Branch and its successor, the Civil Aeronautics Authority (later the Civil Aviation Administration), 1927-48. While at Commerce, Stanton was involved in all areas of airways work, from layout to administration, including periods as Acting Administrator (1940-42), Deputy Administrator (1944-48), and Administrator of Civil Aeronautics (1942-44).
