Physical Description

  • Japanese woodcut print of a street scene with two balloons aloft over the city. American flag in the center of the scene and the Western-style dress suggest this scene is supposed to take place in the United States.
  • The print may depict the balloon flights witnessed by the Japanese Embassy in Philadelphia on June 14, 1860. The artist, misunderstanding the place and the event, may simply have made a mistake and assumed that the scene took place in Washington.
