Collection Item Summary:

Walter Wellman (1858-1934), standing in the middle on the lower stair, with members of a Swedish expedition to Spitzbergen, c.1898. A member of the 1898-1899 Wellman Polar Expedition, Evelyn Briggs Baldwin, is in the top row, second from the left. Another member of the Wellman expedition, Quirof Harlan, is the man with the broad white bow tie. A caption on the back of the photograph states: "This picture was taken at midnight on the piazza of Consul [Andreas] Aagaard's house in Troms,̜ Norway. The gentlemen at Mr. Wellman's right and left are members of the Swedish expedition to Spitzbergen. Mr. Harlan of the Wellman party has the flaring white tie. Mr. Baldwin is in the rear at the right of the smooth-faced young man. Consul Aagaard is at the..." (caption ends). Andreas Aagaard was the Austro-Hungarian consul in Troms.̜
