Collection Item Summary:

The Wellman-Vaniman airship "America" and the Royal Norwegian Navy ship "Farm". On August 15, 1909, Walter Wellman, Melvin Vaniman, Nicholas Popov, and A.L. Loud attempted a flight to the North Pole from Camp Wellman, their base at Virgohamna (Virgo Bay) on Dansky̜a (Danes Island) in the Svalbard archipelago. After running into difficulties, the airship was taken in tow by "Farm" and returned to Camp Wellman. Identical to 9A10685 and 9A10703.
