Collection Item Summary:

The Wellman-Vaniman airship "America" seen from the deck of the Royal Norwegian Navy ship "Farm". On August 15, 1909, Walter Wellman, Melvin Vaniman, Nicholas Popov, and A.L. Loud attempted a flight to the North Pole from Camp Wellman, their base at Virgohamna (Virgo Bay) on Dansky̜a (Danes Island) in the Svalbard archipelago. After running into difficulties, the airship was taken in tow by "Farm" and returned to Camp Wellman. In this photograph, "America" has settled on the water and crewmen from "Farm" are helping to attach the tow rope.
