Collection Item Summary:

The Wellman Polar Expedition's airship hangar at Camp Wellman on Virgohamna (Virgo Bay), Dansky̜a (Danes Island), in the Svalbard archipelago, August 15, 1909. On that day, Walter Wellman, Melvin Vaniman, Nicholas Popov, and A.L. Loud attempted a flight to the North Pole. After running into difficulties, the airship was taken in tow by the Norwegian navy steamer "Farm" and returned to Camp Wellman. The caption reads "The Hangar Danes Island, Spitsbergen. Aug 15 1909 of the Wellman Polar Expedition". Image is identical to NASM-9A10699.
