Towed by the German steamer "Express", the Wellman-Vaniman airship "America" emerges from its hangar at Camp Wellman at Virgohamna (Virgo Bay) on Dansky̜a (Danes Island) in the Svalbard archipelago before its attempt to fly to the North Pole on September 2, 1907. Tossed by heavy winds and hampered by an inadequate motor, "America" landed on Fuglepyntbreen Glacier (Fowl Point Glacier), 10 miles northeast of Virgohamna, after a three hour flight. Its crew of three, Walter Wellman, Melvin Vaniman, and Felix Reisenberg, were unhurt. Identical to NASM-9A10712.
