Collection Item Summary:

Right side view of the Wellman-Vaniman airship "America" in flight during Walter Wellman's attempt to fly to the North Pole on September 2, 1907. Starting from his base at Camp Wellman on Virgohamna (Virgo Bay), Dansky̜a (Danes Island) in the Svalbard archipelago. Tossed by heavy winds and hampered by an inadequate motor, "America" landed on Fuglepyntbreen Glacier (Fowl Point Glacier), 10 miles northeast of Virgohamna, after a three hour flight. Its crew of three, Walter Wellman, Melvin Vaniman, and Felix Reisenberg, were unhurt. Identical to NASM-9A10713.
