This medal was given to Dr. Charles Stark Draper by the French Academy of Sciences in 1978 when he was named as a Foreign Associate of the organization, one of the earliest academies of science. Founded in 1666 by Louis XIV at the suggestion of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the French Academy of Sciences encourages and protects the spirit of French scientific research.
