Hollywood Goes to War: World War I on the Big Screen

Movies have always shaped our cultural memory of historical events, and World War I has been a rich subject for filmmakers. The National Air and Space Museum will explore Hollywood’s finest feature films on the subject in Hollywood Goes to War: World War I on the Big Screen, a year-long film series presented as part of the Museum’s observance of the hundredth anniversary of the First World War. We have selected the most visually striking and engaging dramas on World War I, and will screen a different film each month at our location in Washington, DC, as well as the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

On April 6, 1917, the United States entered World War I, setting America on a course to become a major player on the world stage. It was a turning point in our nation’s history that still influences world events a century later. This film series will explore how World War I, and its far-reaching effects, have been represented and interpreted on the big screen.
