The Ask An Expert lecture series at the National Mall building is presented every Wednesday at noon. A Museum staff member talks to the public about the history, collection, or personalities related to a specific artifact or exhibition in the Museum.

In 1838, six US Navy vessels set out on a great voyage of exploration under the command of Captain Charles Wilkes. The four-year-long expedition included a full circumnavigation of the globe. A tremendous feat of navigation, the expedition broadened knowledge of uncharted areas of the world and helped expand American commerce, industry, and scientific knowledge. It cemented the status of the United States as a global economic leader.
