Hands-On Activities

Space Race (Gallery 114)
Build your own tools to help you explore the universe

    • Build a pocket solar clock, which works like a small sundial.
    • Build a working astrolabe out of paper.
    • Design a telescope-(non-working)
    • Recreate a Nebra Sky Disk (A Bronze Age star map)

South Lobby
Create astronomical art from around the world 

    • Decorate your Sun Sign (Greek Mythology)
    • Discover your Tibetan Sun Sign
    • Design your own constellation
    • Make a comet and Native American Morning Star

Observe the sky(weather permitting)

  • Public Observatory (outside near McDonald's)
  • Look for astronomy related Discovery Stations throughout the Museum.

"Make Your Own Telescope" is one of the most popular activities offered at the National Air and Space Museum's annual Explore the Universe Family Day. Here, visitors enjoy looking through the telescopes they just built.
