Incredible technological and logistical challenges were overcome to make it possible for those on Earth to watch a live television feed of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon on July 21, 1969. For the first time in its 40 year history, the Museum now displays a re-creation of this in the newly reopened Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall. Join space history curator Jennifer Levasseur to learn about how engineers faced those challenges and what it meant for our collective visual memory and the historical record of one of humanity’s crowning achievements.

Meet at the Welcome Center in the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall on the first floor.

About the Ask an Expert lecture series: Every Wednesday at noon in the National Mall Building, a Museum staff member talks to the public about the history, collection, or personalities related to a specific artifact or exhibition in the Museum.
