Star Trek: The Original Series turns 50 on September 8, 2016, and we're celebrating by inviting 15 Instagrammers to join us for the Museum's first InstaMeet. From 7:30 to 9:00 am that morning, these invited Instagrammers will:

  • Get exclusive, early access to the Star Trek starship Enterprise studio model 
  • Talk with curator Maraget Weitekamp about the impact of Star Trek
  • Spend time in our recently transformed Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall before the Museum opens for the day
  • Have their posts featured on our interactive wall in Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall and on the Museum's Instagram account

Registration for the #BoldlyGo50 InstaMeet is open from noon EDT Friday, August 19 to noon EDT Friday, August 26. Please see the registration  requirements below before signing up. Participants will be notified by Friday, August 26.

What is the #BoldlyGo50 InstaMeet?

On September 8, 9 and 10, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series with a variety of events, including the Museum's first ever InstaMeet. #BoldlyGo50 InstaMeet participants have the opportunity to spend time with the recently restored Star Trek starship Enterprise studio model, as well as:

  • Talk with curator Maraget Weitekamp about the impact of Star Trek
  • Have our recently transformed Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall to themselves before the Museum opens for the day
  • Have their posts featured on our interactive wall in Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall and on the Museum's Instagram account

What is an InstaMeet?

An InstaMeet is an informal meeting of people who are active on Instagram. National Air and Space Museum InstaMeets provide the Museum's Instagram followers with the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes, see our collections, interact with our experts, and sometimes meet special guests. Participants can expect an experience lasting about one hour and some free time to explore the Museum, talk with other Instagrammers, and meet staff behind the Museum's social media outreach.

How do I register?

Registration opens at 12 pm EDT on Friday, August 19 and the deadline to apply is 12 pm EDT on Friday, August 26. A maximum of 15 Instagrammers will be selected to attend the InstaMeet. Registration is for one person only and is non-transferable. You must be 18 years or older to register. Participants will be notified via email no later than Friday, August 19. Instagrammers are selected from those who sign up on the web. Additional registrants are placed on a waiting list.

Do I need to have an Instagram account to register for a National Air and Space Museum InstaMeet? 

Yes, National Air and Space Museum InstaMeets are designed for active Instagrammers who follow the Museum. The goal of our InstaMeets is to allow people who regularly interact with the Museum and each other via Instagram to meet in person and share the experience of visiting the Museum's collections, experts, and programs.

The Fine Print (Terms & Conditions):

Registrants must follow the National Air and Space Museum on Instagram and actively share content.

Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to be eligible for selection to attend the InstaMeet. Registration is for one person only and is not transferable. If you are selected for the InstaMeet but cannot attend, please let the Museum know and your space will be given to another registrant on the wait list.

InstaMeet participants are responsible for their own expenses for travel, accommodations, food and incidentals. Please let the Museum know if you have any special needs or accessibility requirements prior to arriving for the event.

Some events and participants scheduled to appear at the InstaMeet are subject to change without notice. The Smithsonian is not responsible for loss or damage incurred as a result of attending. The Smithsonian, moreover, is not responsible for loss or damage incurred in the event it cancels the event with limited or no notice. Please plan accordingly.

On the day of the InstaMeet, registrants must show a government issued ID (driver's license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted.

All InstaMeet participants will be asked to sign a release form allowing the Smithsonian to use images or video taken of you and posts created by you about the event.

You will also be briefed on guidelines designed to respect the privacy of our Museum visitors.

What are @airandspace InstaMeet registration requirements?

By registering for a National Air and Space Museum InstaMeet, you are indicating your intention to travel to the site of the event and attend in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, accommodation, food and other amenities. National Air and Space Museum locations are part of the Smithsonian Institution. You will need to provide government-issued identification (driver's license or passport) that matches the name provided on your registration.

Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?

Yes, non-U.S. citizens may register to attend National Air and Space Museum InstaMeets

When and how will I know if I am selected?

After registration closes, an e-mail with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those selected as well as those on a waitlist. If you are on the waitlist, you may receive an invitation only if someone on the original selection list cancels and a space opens up.

What if I cannot travel to the InstaMeet?

If you cannot attend in person, please do not register for the InstaMeet. However, you can still plan to join the conversation by following the Museum and the official event hashtag - #BoldlyGo50.

Can I bring friends or family members to the InstaMeet with me? 

No. InstaMeet activities are for registrants only.

What else should I know?

You will be asked to sign a photo release form allowing the Smithsonian to use your Instagram posts and any images or video taken of you during the event.  You will also be briefed on guidelines designed to respect the privacy of our visitors.
