During the Korean War, military aviation evolved in dramatic fashion. Piston (propeller driven) fighters with straight wings became museum pieces while sleek, swept-wing turbojet powered fighters took their place. Short-range machine guns became secondary weapons to heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles. These changes in technology resulted in a new doctrine for air forces around the world. Come visit "Fighter Alley" at the Udvar-Hazy Center with curator Dik Daso this Thursday at 12:30 to examine these developments.

The Ask An Expert lecture series at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is presented every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 12:30 PM. A Museum staff member talks to the public about the history, collection, or personalities related to a specific artifact or exhibition in the Museum.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall. The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. The two sites together showcase the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world.
