The EVA of Astronaut James Irwin, or Apollo XV EVA
Pierre Mion
Acrylic on canvas
1971

Working alongside Norman Rockwell, Pierre Mion created some impressive space art. Here, he depicts Apollo 15 moonwalker James Irwin exiting the command/service module to help his crewmate, Alfred Worden, perform the first deep-space spacewalk to retrieve film. Worden can be seen reflected in Irwin’s spacesuit visor, and described the experience to Mion for this painting. A nearly full Moon in the background reminds the viewer of where the astronauts have just been.
