Art of the Space Age

Space inspired artists even before the dawn of the space age, but actual human and robotic spaceflight presented exciting new possibilities.

In the fine art collection of the National Air and Space Museum, certain moments emerge as ones that have been particularly compelling for artists — the beginning of the space age in 1957, sending astronauts to the Moon and back in 1969, seeing the whole Earth from space in 1972, and creating a better picture of our home galaxy in 1992.

We invite you to consider these artists’ inspirations and their creations — objects and images that reflect the amazing visions made possible by spaceflight.
