July is National Ice Cream Month! On March 16, 1922, the staff of Aeromarine Airways in Miami, Florida, held an impromptu ice cream party. Aeromarine flew a summer plane service in New York and a winter service between Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas. In addition to the great weather, the Caribbean Islands provided access to alcohol for thirsty Americans suffering the effects of Prohibition.
According to Roland Rolhfs, manager of the Miami office, the staff discovered a shipment of ice cream that they had failed to deliver to the Lighthouse at Bimini in the Bahamas. They were more than willing to save the ice cream from its untimely melted fate by eating it themselves!
