President Reagan and President Gorbachev spoke to dignitaries as they signed an Intermediate Range Nuclear Weapons Treaty in the White House. The treaty negoitiations were finalized as part of a U.S. Soviet summit held in Washington, DC.

The deployment of intermediate-range ballistic missiles in the 1980s ignited protests throughout Europe. The elimination of these weapons greatly reduced international tensions.
