According to the INF Treaty, each side could keep 15 disabled missiles and launchers to exhibit in museums or public sites. The Smithsonian received two Pershing II missiles and a launcher. The Museum exchanged one Pershing II with the Soviet Union for this SS-20 missile. Per the treaty’s terms, the missiles cannot be moved without notifying the U.S. Defense Department and the Russian Ministry of Defense.
