Near-Instantaneous Communication Across the Ocean

Launched in July 1962, Telstar communications satellite provided a near instantaneous ability to have transatlantic communication between the U.S. and Europe. In the midst of the Cold War, Telstar was not just a new communication ability. It introduced geopolitical and societal questions that would become part of a larger cultural context about the meaning of television.
