    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:
    Ms. Amy Bauer

The National Aviation and Space Exploration Wall of Honor recognizes Jay G. Bauer as a permanent member for his involvement and achievements in flying. First Lieutenant Jay G. Bauer, U.S. Army, received his pilot's license in February of 1970 upon his completion of fixed wing flight school at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, Following flight school he was deployed to Vietnam where he flew a single engine utility aircraft doing radio relays and air support for friendly ground troops.

First Lieutenant Bauer received his first Distinguished Flying Cross medal for his actions on December 8, 1970 for heroism while serving as the pilot of a reconnaissance airplane performing in the role of radio relay for friendly ground units operating in Phu Yen Province, While under heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Bauer maneuvered his aircraft multiple times over key enemy locations, which allowed gunships to accurately fire upon enemy positions.

Again, on February 3, 1971, Lieutenant Jay G. Bauer, with complete disregard for his personal safety went above and beyond the call of duty by giving air support to a MACV while under attack. On this morning, while on a routine flight, Lieutenant Bauer spotted numerous enemy troops advancing upon the Vihn Hoa Hamlet. With no other support available, Lieutenant Bauer used his artillery and rockets to break enemy formation relieving the immediate danger on the friendly forces until gunships and navy gunboats could arrive and provide additional support. After eight intense hours and two airplanes, Lieutenant Bauer's brave actions were recognized and he was awarded his second Distinguished Flying Cross medal and subsequently awarded the Vietnamese Flying Cross.

Upon returning home in March of 1971, Captain Bauer continued flying for the U.S. Army until release from service in September 1973. He also enjoyed flying in his own single engine Cessna with his wife and daughters on family vacations as a civilian. Captain Jay U. Bauer is a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society where details of these events can be found (http://www.dfcsocietv.org). With love, your family honors Jay G. Bauer,
