James Collie served on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1966, leaving with the rank of LTjg.
After active service he became a civilian official with the U.S. Navy, and spent a 33-year career with the Naval Sea Systems Command. During his career with the Navy, he received the Navy's "Superior Civilian Service Award" and the Navy's "Distinguished Civilian Service Award" among other honors. He was also appointed to the "Senior Executive Service", the government's top professional level.
