LTC John Bauer graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science in 1995. Commissioned as an aviation officer, LTC Bauer attended flight school and became an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior pilot. He subsequently served his first assignment as an air cavalry scout in the 82nd Airborne Division at ft. Bragg. After receiving training in the CH-47 Chinook, LTC Bauer then joined the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment as a MH-47E pilot, where he served as assistant operations officer, platoon leader, operations officer and company commander. His six years in the 160th included a 10-month tour in Korea and multiple deployments to Afghanistan and the Philippines in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. In 2006, he began two years of studies at the Command and General Staff College at Ft.
Leavenworth, completing the Armys School of Advanced Military Studies
(SAMS) and earning two Masters in Military Art and Science On in Military History, and the other in Theater Operations. LTC Bauer then served as a strategy and plans officer with the Special Operations Command Korea.
Following two years of resident studies at the university of South Carolina, LTC Bauer taught Philosophy and English Composition at West Point prior to receiving his assignment as a military faculty member for the Joint and Combine Warfighting School at the Joint Forces Staff college. An Amy Strategist, LTC Bauer has published ethics and strategy-related articles in Military review, Parameters, and Joint Force Quarterly. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of South Carolina, and his research interests include just war theory, virtue ethics, and natural law. Married to the former Hilary Seth, together they and their eight children reside in Cape Charles, Virginia. Upon his retirement, at the end of August 2017, Dr. Bauer will serve as an adjunct professor at Regent University.
