Summary

The 1937 National Aviation Show was held at Grand Central Palace in New York city from January 28 to February 6, 1937. This collection consists of two separate pieces of memorabilia made from matting signed National Aviation Show stationery along with photographs of aircraft on display at the event. The memorabilia contains numerous autographs.

Biographical / Historical

The 1937 National Aviation Show was held at Grand Central Palace in New York city from January 28 to February 6, 1937. The opening ceremonies were officiated by Mayor Fiorello Henry LaGuardia and Howard Robard Hughes. Thirty-two aircraft were on display for show and/or sale including the Seversky AP-1 (Army Pursuit); Grumman G-22 "Gulfhawk II"; a Northrop Gamma 2D operated by Trans World Airlines (TWA) as an "overweather" laboratory; Pitcairn AC-35 Roadable Autogiro; Fairchild 24 (Kreider-Reisner C8-C); and the Taylor (Piper) J-2 Cub. Additional items on display included propellers by Sesenich and Maynard-Di Cesare and detachable amphibious gear for land planes from the Edo Corporation.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two separate pieces of memorabilia made from matting signed National Aviation Show stationery along with photographs of aircraft on display at the event. The first piece is comprised of a black mat that measures approximately 12.25 by 18 inches and displays a sheet of National Aviation Show letterhead paper which is signed by various aviation figures and includes a black ink stamp with the logo, location, and dates of the 1937 show in New York. Above the letterhead sheet there are two photos which show the Seversky AP-1 (Army Pursuit) (A/C No. X18Y) and the Grumman G-22 "Gulfhawk II" (A/C No. NR1050) on display at the show. The second piece consists of a black mat that measures approximately 15.5 by 7 inches, displayed in which is a National Aviation Show letterhead envelope, with a postage stamp, that has been stamped with the same black ink stamp as the piece of letterhead paper and is also signed by various persons. To the left of the envelope, there is another image of the Seversky AP-1 (Army Pursuit) (A/C No. X18Y) on display. Signatures on the two pieces include those of Edward Lee "Swanee" Taylor; Jean Felix Piccard; Roscoe Turner; Iris Louise McPhetridge Thaden; Walter Herschel Beech; Hugh Herndon, Jr.; William Powell "Bill" Lear, Sr.; Charles S. "Casey" Jones; Frank Hawks; Ruth Rowland Nichols; Augustus Post; Viola Gentry; Daniel Webb "Tommy" Tomlinson IV; and Alexander Procofieff De Seversky.
