Naval Air Station (NAS) Sunnyvale was commissioned and dedicated in April 1933 and served as the permanent home base for the US Navy Airship ZRS-5 Macon. Hangar One was built to house the Macon along with other lighter-than-air craft. Hangars Two and Three were added to house additional lighter-than-air craft during World War II. NAS Sunnyvale was renamed to NAS Moffett Field in September 1933 in honor of William A. Moffett.
