Summary

This album consists of photographs relating to sightseeing flights offered in a Curtiss Eagle I aircraft in Washington, DC, beginning in autumn 1920.

Biographical / Historical

The Curtiss Eagle I was a three-engined airliner introduced in 1919 which featured many innovations such as a well-designed and convenience-filled cabin, pilots that were seated within the cabin, and an undercarriage featuring two sets of tandem wheels that incorporated a streamlined metal fairing covering most of each wheel. Beginning in autumn 1920, sightseeing flights in the Curtiss Eagle I were offered in Washington, DC. The flights, which departed from Bolling Field, carried prominent government and elected officials and their families as well as visiting foreign dignitaries.

Scope and Contents

This album consists of photographs relating to sightseeing flights offered in a Curtiss Eagle I aircraft in Washington, DC, beginning in autumn 1920. Many of the photographs show various groups of passengers posed by the aircraft, in most cases the photographs are labeled with names of persons shown as well as the date of the flight. Some pilots are shown, including Bertrand Blanchard Acosta. The photographs also include aerial photography of Washington, DC, as well as some air to air views of the Curtiss Eagle I in flight.
