This collection consists of a scrapbook covering the International Aviation Meet at Belmont Park, Long Island, New York in October 1910, the Aero Meet at Grant Park, Chicago in August 1911, as well as other early aviation activities.

Biographical / Historical

The second International Aviation Meet took place at Belmont Park, Long Island, New York from October 22 to 30, 1910. Numerous prizes were awarded throughout this tournament in relation to speed, altitude, duration, and distance. Another major aviation meet took place at Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois in August 1911.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a scrapbook covering the International Aviation Meet at Belmont Park, Long Island, New York in October 1910, including the statistics of airplanes involved, official Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) barograph records, and numerous photographs of participants with their aircraft. The scrapbook also includes coverage of the Aero Meet at Grant Park, Chicago in August 1911 as well as other early aviation activities. Pilots shown in the scrapbook include Glenn Hammond Curtiss; Augustus Post; Arch Hoxsey; Harry Harkness; Frank M. Kennedy; William S. Luckey; Hugh Armstrong Robinson; Roy Carrington Kirtland; Harry Graham; Frederick E. Humphreys; and Frank Purdy Lahm. Aircraft shown in the scrapbook include models by Curtiss; Wright; Blériot; Antoinette; Santos-Dumont; Clément-Bayard; Farman; Baldwin (Thomas); Grahame-White; and the Frisbie 1910 Biplane. An inscription inside the front cover of the album reads, "To Glenn H. Curtiss, With the compliments of C. C. Culver, Lt. Col. A.C., Langley Field, Va, June 1, 1929."
