Summary

Charles H. Huettner served as a pilot with the US Air Force who trained at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas as part of class 70-06 and flew during and after the Vietnam War. Huettner flew Lockheed C-141 Starlifter aircraft from McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, and served in the US Air Force Reserves after his active duty ended. This collection consists of approximately 1.97 cubic feet of material relating to Huettner's flight training with the US Air Force.

Biographical / Historical

Charles H. Huettner served as a pilot in the US Air Force during and after the Vietnam War. Huettner trained at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas as part of class 70-06. After pilot training, Huettner flew Lockheed C-141 Starlifter aircraft from McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. After his active duty, Huettner continued to serve in the US Air Force Reserves, including holding the position of Reserve Augmentee to the Air Force Chief of Safety, until his retirement at the rank of colonel. Huettner's civilian career included work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) where he started as an inspector, was tasked with creating the Advanced Simulation Program in 1979, and became the Deputy and Acting Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety. He worked extensively with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as their Director of Aviation Safety Research, became the Senior Aviation Advisor in the White House Office of Scientific and Technology Policy, and retired as the Executive Director of the Presidential Commission on the Future of the US Aerospace Industry. Huettner's military honors include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of approximately 1.97 cubic feet of material relating to Charles H. Huettner's flight training as part of US Air Force class 70-06 at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas including training manuals, study guides, class notes and handouts, maps and charts, as well as a class 70-06 yearbook. Aircraft models covered in the collection include the Cessna T-37 (Cessna 318), Northrop T-38 Talon, Cessna T-41 Mescelaro, and, most extensively, the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter. Materials pertaining to the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter cover topics including the pitch trim system, spoiler system, APN-59B Radar Set, AC distribution system, engine bleed air systems, engine information, environmental systems, hydraulic system, engine starting procedures, fuel system, weight checklist and loading data, all weather landing system, engine fuel system, DC power supply and distribution, AC generator system, starting and ignition system, constant speed drive, and the thrust reverser system, and a flight crew checklist and procedures. Materials pertaining to the Cessna T-37 (Cessna 318), Northrop T-38 Talon, and Cessna T-41 Mescelaro cover topics including flight planning, procedures, systems operation, flight report and maintenance record, instrument procedures and radio aids, and navigation. In addition, there are general training materials covering many topics, including radar, AFTO Form 781, parasail/parachute familiarization, aviation physiology, navigation, weather, principles of flight, instruments, aerodynamics, automatic direction finding, VOR, combat airlift operations, drill and ceremonies, survival, electronic warfare familiarization, officer career planning, counterinsurgency, and aural code. The collection also includes some material relating to Laredo Air Force Base and a booklet about Torrejon Air Base, Spain.
