Biographical / Historical

George Coleman developed an airship in Ohio in 1877. The balloon was approximately 85 feet in length and 50 feet in diameter, and was inflated by hot air from an iron furnace in the basket. Instead of using a net, Coleman's balloon was designed with a series of cords sewn into the seams of the balloon. Coleman made several ascensions in the balloon from permanent exhibition grounds in Holmes County that were viewed by the public, free of charge since funds had been raised by local businesses. Coleman intended to make an attempt to cross the Atlantic in this balloon in July 1878.
