Prior to 1971, when the Smithsonian Institution Office of Printing and Photographic Services (OPPS) was formed (later known as the Office of Imaging, Printing and Photographic Services, OIPP), all SI bureaus kept track of their collections of new and copy photography using their own methods and numbering systems. This collection contains material which was part of the system used by the National Air Museum (NAM), the forerunner of the Natonal Air and Space Museum.
