The U.S. Air Force Pre-1954 Still Photo Collection, on loan to and administered by NASM during the period from 1983 through 1997, consisted of approximately 145,000 images (5,300 in color) and covered the history of the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors (U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Army Air Forces) prior to 1954. The photographs were collected by the Air Force as a representative record and divided into five roughly chronological series: Pre-1940, World War II, Pre-1954 Domestic, Pre-1954 Non-Domestic and Korean War. On January 1, 1998 this collection was transferred to the Still Pictures Branch of the National Archives (Record Group 342, Series FH).

Scope and Contents

This accession consists in part of a total of over 700 copy negatives representing images from the United States Air Force Pre-1954 Still Photos Collection. These copy negatives were made by NASM from Air Force negatives during the period when the Air Force Pre-1954 collection was on loan to NASM. Several related resources that were created by NASM staff to support the larger collection are to be considered as a part of accession XXXX-0596 as well, including the following databases: USAFMAIN.DB, USAFCAPS.DB, COLOR.DB, USAFART.DB, AFOLDSUB.DB and NOSEART.DB. Also included is one document box of material that provides cross-referencing information for the USAF art collection, another containing 73 8 x 10 inch prints and six 4 x 5 inch prints, the film and videotape used to produce discs 3 and 4 of NASM's videodisc program, the videodiscs themselves and the finding aids produced by NASM staff to facilitate access to the images on discs 3 and 4.
