Admiral William A. Moffett (1869--1933) graduated from the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1890 and was highly decorated for his service in the Navy which centered around the topic of naval airships. This collection consists of three certificates issued to Moffett.

Biographical / Historical

Admiral William A. Moffett (1869--1933) graduated from the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1890 and was highly decorated for his service in the Navy. His major career interest was focused on naval airships. From 1914 to 1918 he was Commandant of the US Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois, and from 1921 until his death he served as Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics. He died April 4, 1933 in the crash of the USS Akron.

This collection consists of the following three certificates issued to William A. Moffett: President William McKinley appointing Moffett to Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy, June 1899, signed by McKinley; President Warren G. Harding appointing Moffett to the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, March 1921, signed by Harding; and President Herbert Hoover appointing Moffett Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, March 1929, signed by Hoover.
