Charles Green Born the son of a London fruit seller in 1785, thirty-six year old Charles Green made his first flight on July 19, 1821, in celebration of the coronation of George IV. It was also the first time anyone had flown with an envelope full of city illuminating gas, which quickly became common practice among aeronauts on both sides of the Atlantic. The undisputed "king" of British aeronauts he had made over 500 flights before undertaking his last ascent on September 12, 1852. During the course of that long career, he made some of the most noted flights of the era.
