Rocket, Second Stage, S-II-F/D Dynamic Test Vehicle, Saturn V
Cylindrical, with honeycomb surface around central section; five J-2 rocket engines and their respective nozzles, protruding from rear; Temporary Handling Structure or Ring, yellow, attached at front; stringer or corrugated bands around base, after J-2 rocket engines, and second band of corrugated construction around top, before Temporary Handling Structure; overall, painted white, with unpainted metallic gray band around base, followed by broad black band; both these bands constitute the corrugated construction around rear end. As per inspection trip of NASM Curator Frank H. Winter on 1 March 2004, there are several severe holes onder front belly of this stage, revealing details of honeycomb skin construction and water saturation of the fabric makeup within the honeycomb. Also observed was a in-line series of equidistant holes along belly, indicating heavy water buildup over the years with consequent deterioration at attachment points along belly.
