Beta cloth bags of this type were flown on all Apollo missions to contain and protect various items during flight. This bag was one of three flown on the Apollo 11 mission.
It was transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian in 1970 along with the Command Module Columbia.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
