Each Apollo spacecraft was equipped with a set of two survival rucksacks. The contents were to be used in the event of an emergency landing in remote areas of the world.
This clear plastic bag along with an attached mechanism was designed to remove salt from seawater, making the water drinkable. It was part of the survival rucksack 1 flown on the Apollo 15 mission in July/August 1971.
This desalination bag was transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian in 1978.
