Space shuttle astronaut Pamela Melroy obtained this cap while she was preparing for the STS-112 mission on Atlantis in 2002. Crewmembers often wore casual clothing identifying their mission to astronaut corps social and athletic events. "Tank Girl" was one of Melroy's pilot call signs, related to her Air Force role as pilot and commander of KC-10 airborne refueling tankers. "Tank Girl" also alluded to a 1995 science fiction comedy film that she had seen. This cap suggests Melroy's good-natured sense of humor.
She gave the cap, and various other personal possessions and papers, to the Museum in 2018.
