This boot was part of a pair worn by astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra, pilot of the Mercury 8 mission, NASA's fifth manned space mission on October 3, 1962.

Mercury boots were not integrated into the suit. The suit pressure bladder covered the foot and was inserted into the boot, which was adjusted separately.

They were lightweight, nylon-fabric boots with tennis-shoe-type soles. The upper surface was of an aluminized nylon fabric with front closing zipper and adjustment lacings on each side.This configuration prevented the foot from ballooning under pressure.

NASA transferred this boot to the museum after Project Mercury.
