This boot is part of the pair worn by Scott Carpenter on his Mercury mission in May 1962. Mercury boots were not integrated into the suit. The suit pressure bladder covered the foot and was inserted into the boot, which was adjusted separately.
They were lightweight, nylon-fabric boots with tennis-shoe-type soles. The upper surface was of an aluminized nylon fabric with front closing zipper and adjustment lacings on each side.
