The Distinguished Flying Cross was established by Presidential order on January 28, 1927. The medal is awarded to United States Military personnel for heroism or extraordinary achievement during an aerial flight

This medal was presented to Lt. Col. Curtis LeMay for his participation in pioneering the military ferry route from the United States to the Middle East in February 1942..
