This case held the medal that comprised the United States Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service award given to Dr. Charles Stark Draper in 1960. The award recognizes exceptionally distinguished service and accomplishments with significant Air Force-wide scope and impact, and is the highest award granted to a civilian. Dr. Draper received it for his work from 1946-1960 in guidance, navigation, and control systems for numerous Air Force weapons systems and his service during the same period on varous panels of the Scientific Advisory Board that advised the Chief of Staff. He also received the award in 1951, 1967, and 1969. Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this medal, to the National Collection in 1974.
