Each Apollo spacecraft was equipped with a set of two survival rucksacks. The contents were to be used in the event of an emergency landing in remote areas of the world.
This set of eight cans of chemical salt removal was part of survival rucksack #1 flown on the Apollo 15 mission in July/August 1971. The Apollo 15 crew could have used these cans to remove the salt from seawater, making the water drinkable.
This desalination chemical packet was transferred from NASA to the Smithsonian in 1978.
