The Apollo Command module was provided with equipment designed to allow astronauts to position and retain the flight data charts, maps, and manuals, allowing them to view and manipulate reference items in weightless conditions. The so-called "bungee system" included long and short "bungee cords" with hooks to connect them to various spacecraft fixtures, data card clips, food door clips, and these data book retention clips.

This is one of eight such clips that flew on the Apollo 11 lunar mission.

It was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1970.
