James Mackdoodle Physical Description
Hand-colored satirical etching of the fall of the political coalition. Charles James Fox, a Whig, and Lord North, a Tory, had joined to form a coalition government on April 2, 1783. King George III opposed the coalition, which fell on December 17, 1783 following a parliamentary defeat. The Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution was signed during this period. Fox, shown with a fox's head, and North are being lifted into the air by a balloon. The ropes coming from the balloon are tied around their necks, with their heads hanging limply. There is a yelling crowd on the ground. Members of the crowd and Fox and North all have speech bubbles.
